Microsoft Silverlight Tools Alpha for Visual Studio 2008 fails reinstallation

Last week the latest version of Visual Studio 2008 was released, so many of us, have been really busy upgrading machines to the new version. I would like just to have only one machine, but when your main job is development, you need to make sure you always have a machine up and running. So I have installed VS 2008 on a test machine before going to the main developer machine.

I found a problem that I would like you to be aware when going thought the list of items to uninstall, before VS2008

You need to make sure to uninstall Microsoft Silverlight tools Alpha for Visual Studio 2008 before you install the latest release of VS2008, after the installation is complete, do install again those tools.

As you know Silverlight 1.1 will never be released, Microsoft make the decision to name it Silverlight 2.0 as they decided to include more features than ever before planned.  They haven't disclosed what new features will be available on Silverlight 2.0 and that's makes me think about what's going to happen next. Are they bumping up the version so they have more time delivering Silverlight?

There is no word from Microsoft about Silverlight 2.0 supporting 3D graphics, something essential if they are trying to compete with Flash and Flex. Mainly including support for TextBoxes and DropDowns was something expected on Silverlight 1.1.

Silverlight 2.0 will be available in the first quarter of 2008. No news again about previous or supported features that are need it for developers that have been waiting to include this new technology on their production code.

Mr Scott Guthrie posted that he will be releasing a few tutorials about Silverlight 2.0, hopefully he would also release the list of features included in Silverlight 2.0. The only thing to do for now is wait and keep playing with the 1.1 version.

Cheers

Al
