ESRI User Conference and older source code from previous articles

Wednesday, May 23 2007

Again, sorry for the delay and lack of posting lately, being really busy at work and getting home late. Enough time to put the kids to bed and check my email. I do know I haven’t reply to many people asking me for source code from the old articles I posted, I added some in the download tab, so please help yourself, if you do not find the source code you requested, please send me another email and I’ll make sure to include it if I still have the source code, some times I delete it from the hard disk or the external hard disks where I store my old code.

In another important note, I’m very excite about going for the first time and of course working at the ESRI User Conference this year held as always in San Diego. If you are planning to go, please find me at the ASP.NET tech island on June 21st.

Also I won’t be able to make it to the bloggers Meetup http://www.spatiallyadjusted.com/2007/05/15/esri-user-conference-blogger-meetup/

It’s on June 19th at Mister Tiki Mai Tai Lounge, 801 5th Ave, San Diego. If you do not know where that place is, as a GIS professional you got the entire tool to find it.

I won’t be able to make it as my oldest daughter’s birthday is the next day. I hope I’ll see you on the 21st!

I’m sad that I won’t be able to make it to meet all the bloggers I have been reading their post day in and day out since starting at ESRI. There are a few things I wanted to talk to them about the GIS technology that I’m still learning and above all the discipline they show with their blogs. I cannot keep up with comments and emails, even when I plan my day to most strict schedule. I have for many years learned to plan my day to accomplish 80% at the end of the day. I have been using my little system for a few years with partial success. There are a few flaws on the system that I blame not having enough time and some jobs are never finished in the same day. I’m sure I could improve it and some suggestions will be very welcome.

In the morning I divide all my day in quarters, I like to wake up early to check my email at home before riding the bike to the office. I write down all my work for the day, I’ll spend 10 hours rewarding myself when I finish a task by marking the job done in the paper. I know, not very rewarding but creates an accomplishment feeling of completion. At 5:30 I leave work, so all non complete work will be left to the next day. Of course on deadlines is when the schedules is substituted by working as many hours as I can. After work, is all about my children, I will spend the rest of their wake time with them until I put them to bed.

After their bed time, I’ll dedicate an hour to work in my blog and reply emails or answer questions at the asp.net forums.

This is in a nutshell a schedule I like to keep, allows me to divide time and tasks and find out how long it takes me to complete a task. My next goal is to improve my productivity by waking up earlier and get an extra hour to learn other technologies or help more online by answering question and replying emails.

I would like to know how other people work, people that keeps a blog, work and family time. What system do you implemented to dedicate enough time for everything?

Cheers

Al

Apart from ‘last thing before going to bed and first thing next morning and countless time in between’ I have tried to integrate blogging with my work at day job. Yes, I blog my day job work and that is what has made it possible for me to run a personal blog as well. In addition, I rarely write blog specific articles. Fact is that I write for print media and bring my articles on blog after they had appeared in print.
