iPhone and AT&T reviewed after 2 months of service
I got as many of you know, the iPhone for Xmas, great device ahead of it's time, or perhaps better I say, cell phone manufactures and computer makers have been sleeping, or worse yet, they have not been taking chances. That's why the symbian is the most popular cell phone.
The iPhone is without any doubt the future of cell phone, I personally don't use the cell phone much, however I use the iPhone all the time as a PDA, calendar, weather, maps and of course email.
After 2 months I still love the iPhone, however I found a few things that made me regret to purchased the device, mainly I have been unhappy with the service more than the device.
The iPhone Customer Services
If you have an iPhone, you'll have sometime to talk to customer services at AT&T, something that nobody wants to do, however purchasing an iPhone you'll be force to do so. Why, they disabled all the features to manage just using the web, when you login into your wireless.att.com account, your features will be disabled:
F999: You can view your current features as an iPhone customer, but you are not able to add or remove features online at this time. If you would like to add or remove a feature, please contact customer service at 800-331-0500.
You'll be forced to call the number to make any changes to you iPhone. AT&T disabled all features to avoid iPhone customers to remove the data plan. Could they just disable the data plan?
Talking to customer services at AT&T
So, you want to enable international calling while you are on vacation for that week, you'll find yourself calling and being on hold at least 20 minutes. In my experienced for the past 2 months, I was unable to talk to a person in less than 20 minutes.
AT&T coverage
Coming from Verizon Wireless I found the coverage in Southern California pretty good, still the phone calls will be dropped in the middle of the conversation, however the quality of voice will be better than other carriers I have tried. Do not leave SoCal as the coverage in non metro areas is extremely bad.
Price
Everybody complains about price for the iPhone service, however is not as bad as people believe for such device, that's the only money AT&T makes with the iPhone. Now for the price only for the iPhone you are sacrificing you voice plan, AT&T has removed all the features for your voice plan.
If you select the $39.99 + $20 data plan.
- Nights start at 9PM at night for the iPhone instead of 7PM, and finishes at 6AM instead of 7AM.
- Nights and Weekends are not unlimited for the iPhone you only get 5000 minutes.
- No SMS messages included.
- Only 450 minutes anytime minutes, and no second billing, if you leave a 4 second message, AT&T will still charge you 1 minute.
AT&T Edge network for data plan
The iPhone handles data really well, surfing the web is pretty slow, but nothing you cannot handle, email is great as keeps checking for new items. The Edge network at AT&T is slow and very patchy, but is everywhere where you can find GSM service. I would prefer to use a 3G network.
Apple Accessories
No doubt you going to need some accessories for your iPhone. The device comes to you pretty naked, only a charger and a little clothe to clean the screen. You will need a screen protector and at least a car charger. I would recommend to get some good shield or cover as the iPhone back and sides are pretty easy to scratch. The screen in the other hand is very strong.
My recommendation is to purchase all that online instead of buying it from Apple, as will cost you 5 times more than going to an online auction site.
Summary
Make sure the money is not a problem when you purchase an iPhone and you won't mind paying around $90 per month, not including the big first month full of charges like activation fees and pro-rated fees for the days you use before the beginning of the month.
