iPhone bluetooth feature broken for music on firmware 1.1.3.

Monday, January 21 2008

So you got an iPhone and you want a bluetooth headphones/headset to listen music and wirelessly been able to answer the phone, those devices run pretty expensive. But not to worry because the iPhone does not support bluetooth audio streaming from the Music library only for the phone part.

We know that sometimes companies need to sacrifice a few features to release a product on time, this new version for the firmware still does not support the iPod with bluetooth, the only option available for you is to use a wired headphones of the little speaker on the buttom of the iPhone.

Looking around on the web, this bug its been there since version 1.1.1. I do not know why Apple didn't fix that issue yet. Some places on the web, claim the Apple never intended to allow you to stream music to your bluetooth, only the phone features, however there was a bug that allowed you to do so.

Work around

No that fixes the problem completely however this will stream the audio using the external speakers on the iPhone and the bluetooth device.

  1. Go to the iPod section and start playing your music.
  2. Disable the timer to lock the phone in the settings section to "never"
  3. Go the the phone and click voicemail, click audio and select the bluetooth device.

This work around allows you to stream part of the audio using the bluetooth device, the speaker will still stream full audio. Also if you lock the screen the audio streamed to the bluetooth device

Using Bluetooth with the phone

Any bluetooth should work for the phone audio on the iPhone, I have used a few Motorolas without any problem and I can't see it having issues with blackberries o2 mobile phones, etc. too. So if you are using some bluetooth for talking to people while driving, you won't have any issue besides the poor options to manage your bluetooth. There isn't an auto answer when connected with a bluetooth device.

One more thing

Voicemail on the iPhone is great, however there is a huge delay between the person living the email and your phone retriving it to be ready to play. I left a message to myself, something I rather do, and took more than 5 minutes to tell me I had a voicemail.

Conclusion

In my personal opinion I believe Apple shoud add the audio button on the iPod part of the iPhone to allow users to stream their music using bluetooth headsets. Also change a few options to allow users connected to the iPhone with Bluetooth allow to answer the phone without having to get the phone out of the pocket. Many Motorola phones already have that feature. As the technology is called "A2dp" and lots of Mp3s already come out with that. I hoping that Apple will fix this issue on version 1.1.4 as already many people submitted the problem.
