Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have anything against Google at all. I believe is a great search engine and I do use the apps in the web in a regular basis. As well there are other companies on the web that provide the services of searching the web.

Google made billions just by providing a search engine; well the AdSense to sell you” pay per click” didn’t hurt.

Now the company is big and in competition with other companies that actually have a physical product out there. You can go to store and purchase it. Google is shifting from the smiley, multi color rounded guy to big bully corporate America! So now we have a new bully in town. Great we didn’t had enough with IBM and Microsoft, now Google is showing its true bright colors.

Well I, for once, I do not take bullies, if I do not have to, I have to use Microsoft operating systems because it is the only one out there to run my apps, and my company uses MS Visual Studio 2005, so I am force to use Microsoft. However, why do I have to use Google? If you look out there, there are lots of other search engines, and some do a better job that Google does. You can use:

http://www.altavista.com/  They are older than Google.

http://www.altavista.com/

http://www.live.com/  My favorite now. I know it’s Microsoft!

http://www.ask.com/     You can see the website before click on the link. Beat that Google!

http://www.chacha.com/

http://quintura.com/

http://www.msn.com/

http://www.baidu.com/

http://alltheweb.com/

http://excite.com/

To mention a few on the web, you do not have to use Google, many choices are available to you, it’s not like operating systems that you only have three choices and when installed into your computer, you are stuck with it until you spend a whole night installing the new OS.

With search engines you can open your browsers and instead of typing Google you can type Excite.com, better yet, change your home page to another search engine of your choice.

This is the thing, I have been using Google for years, therefore they have been making money from me, from all of us. Let’s give the money to another search engine from now on. Google if you want me to keep using you, you’ll need to treat me as a customer, send me a nice basket for Xmas and a nice expensive personalized birthday card on my birthday. I am your customer, please treat me like one.

When I purchased a house, the realtor sent me a nice gift card with a nice bottle of wine for using them instead of using their neighbor. So this is where I am right now, what search engine is going to give me more for using them? Yahoo, Excite, Live, etc … I am taking bids, what do you offer me?

For years we believe that Google provides their search engine for the goodness of helping people and with love from the bottom of its heart. And you talk to your friends to use Google because was free and they do not put big banners anywhere, they are very nice people. They use bright colors on their web page, and their chairs are bill colorful balls!

Well, we are naïve to believe that, every time we use Google, they make money, lots and lots of money, what are they providing in exchange? They are providing us with commercials hidden as links. Yes the two first big bold links are commercials, if you make the mistake to click it, won’t take you to a page with that word you are looking for, will take you to a home page of a business that just paid a few bucks per word to Google, at the second you click that link.

Great, you did not get what you were looking for,  but you just gave more money to the over rich Google that does not know what else to do with its money by buying YouTube for too much money.

By now, if you got here, you may think I hate Google, something that is just not true, I love Google and they did a great job improving and pushing the Web to what is now. There are lots of companies that I hate, Google is not one of them. I can give you the list: But that will have to wait for another day. I should list my top one:

Alaska Airlines: Worse airlines in the world, not because takes you to Microsoft from LA. Just because when you are tired, the kids are hungry and you just want to get home, they treat you like crap if you want to fly with them that day.

Please send me your thoughts; do you believe that Google is still the fun, nice, colorful company? Or you believe its head is just getting too big? Should we stop giving money to a company that now flashes that money down the toilet by purchasing the first thing they see? Do you think I can still sell my dropdownlist to Google for one billion dollars?

Cheers

Al

I think that in real life it's logical ( not desirable, but logical anyway ) that exists one massively present operating system and the same with a search engine.

When you build a website, you want to optimize it for the most famous search engine, and not for 10 or 20. And of course as a website consumer you want to search using the best optimized search engine.

This is a machine of making money, yes but... it's life, like the actors in a TV Show like Friends, are they way better than others ? Then why they earn millions and millions of dollars ?

Load time www.google.com: <0.5 seconds

Load time www.live.com: 10 seconds (ok the search box comes up in about 2-3 seconds, but it keeps loading all kinds of bullshit I don't need)

Morten as always you make a great point. Google's page is very optimize as that was the attraction on the first place to go to Google, I really hope other search engines make their front page lighter and cleaner for people to start using them. However you can use the live plug in for your brower is much faster.

That only helps me prior to do the search, but not getting the search page.

Here are some more facts:

Loading Google.com: 3 http requests and 21kb total.

Loading live.com: 30(!) requests. Didn't bother to add them up, but the first two ones was 20kb each!

Perform search on google.com: 1 request. Loads 20kb of data

Perform search on live.com: 19 requests, again a LOT of bytes.

I like the design of live.com, but it doesn't really do me any good in this case. I need a quick simple search page that I can use as an entrypoint to quickly get to the pages I'm looking for. For some reason, Microsoft keeps overdoing their design, but perhaps most "normal" people likes this. I just don't.
