It’s been my life mission to find the right hosting company for my blog. Why do I hosted and I don’t have my blog with any of this blog places like google or myspace. Well that’s just to easy and also I love Community Server and this is my chance to play with it. Some day, I’ll create some forums and stuff for something useful, for now, blogs is what I want to do. I learn so much from Guru’s blog that, actually, my blog was a way for me to keep the links of blogs and articles I like, and then I could search my blog and find what I wanted. Now I write a little bit more with my wonderful spaglish.

Let me get to the point, the previous time I moved from hosting companies I lost so much information because I could not backup the database, I am again in the same situation. I need to move again from Gate.com. Why, great you asked this question.

I sign up a little blindly, I found out you cannot create virtual directories or backup databases. Then every time I send them and email, they reply after 2 to 3 days, some times never. If I call them, could take for a long conversation for them to answer me. Also my website is not pretty slow, got so many hits lately that I need a faster hoster.

Today I called and this is the conversation.

AL: Hey dude what’s up with the backup of my database, I don’t have access to do so, can you back it up for me and send it?

GATE: No we cannot do that, it’s against our protocol.

AL: TCP/IP, HTTP? What protocol are you talking about?

GATE: We do not back up database.

AL: WTF, ok more reason for allowing me to back up my own database.

GATE: You are not set up to do so, we can backup you database for $80 every time you want it!

AL: $80 WTF. Ok then can I have adminbackupdatabase property to do it myself.

GATE: Please wait ……

20 Minutes later

GATE: Will take around 24 to 48 hours to work.

So, looks like I won’t be able to move hosting companies until this weekend, bet you that in 48 hours I’ll try to backup the database to find out still does not work.

This time I’m going to another hosting company that looks very promising! Still checking the speed, but I love the control panel and the way I can create virtual directories, back up and their technical support is FAST!

Will let you know how it goes!

Al

Update: Now I can backup, I just don't have access to the backed up file!

Al,

I've been with WebSecureStores.com for about ten months (one Community

Server installation, and one DotNetNuke installation) and have been very happy with their service.

In terms of database backups, WebSecureStores does an automatic backup

for you each night and places it in a backups folder on your FTP directory

(what's nice is that this feature is that it's something that's set up automatically as part of the basic account setup process). Your backup directory always contains the last three nights' backups.

They generally take between four to six hours to respond whenever I open a ticket. This seems a little slow, but the quality of the responses have always been good. Also, their control panel software - a product called Helm

(http://www.webhostautomation.com/) - is very easy to use.

I think they still have a free 14 day trial if you want to take them for a test drive.
